KINGFISH RIDE FOUR-GOAL THIRD PAST MOCCASINS, SWEEP WEEKEND

MONROE, La. – The Baton Rouge Kingfish blitzed the Monroe Moccasins with four goals in the third period to secure a road win, 6-2, at Monroe Civic Center.

Jason Brancheau opened the scoring at 13:40 of the first period, burying a breakaway chance down the right wing. Monroe answered 44 seconds later and then took the lead on a well-placed wrist shot from the left circle at 17:43. The Moccasins outshot the Kingfish, 20-5, in the opening frame, but the Kingfish trailed by just one goal thanks to 18 saves from Ed Coffey.

Tyler Williams notched his first goal of the season 5:36 into the second, slotting home a gorgeous cross-crease pass from Nick Ketola. Williams’s goal was the only tally of the middle frame, and the contest headed to the final 20 tied at two goals apiece.

For the second straight night, the Fish exploded for multiple goals early in the third period. Matt Stoia scored at 0:55 on the powerplay, and Dmitry Kuznetsov capitalized on a Monroe turnover 19 seconds later to put Baton Rouge up by two.

Brancheau pumped in another powerplay strike at 8:43 en route to earning first-star honors. Scott Shorrock then buried the ultra-rare three-on-five shorthanded goal with 52 seconds remaining to put the finishing touch on Baton Rouge’s second 6-2 win in as many nights.

The Kingfish were stellar on special teams, converting on two of their five powerplays and killing all seven Moccasins’ man advantages.

Coffey turned aside 35 of Monroe’s 37 shots for his second win of the season and was named the game’s second star.

Baton Rouge returns to action next weekend with a three-in-three against Mid-South beginning Friday night in Southaven, Miss., at Landers Center.
